Halloween Facts!
31st October
Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). This fell at the end of October, and marked the end of te summer and the beginning of the long, dark, cold winter. On this night, the Celts believed that the spirits of the dead would return to earth. To keep the spirits at bay, they lit bonfires and dressed up in animal skins and heads. This is why we wear fancy dress costumes on Halloween. In the first century BC, Samhain was combined with the Roman apple festival of Pomona, which is why we still bob for apples on Halloween today.
