How to make a Paper Mache Easter Egg from a balloon!

Great fun to make for Easter! You can customise the egg however you wish, maybe even put a small teddy inside, ready for the egg to be broken open at Easter! Go wild with your imagination when you decorate the egg and have fun! :-)

To make a Paper Mache Easter Egg you will need -

• A large piece of plastic or lots of newspaper to cover the table with.
• 1 balloon (whatever size you want).
• Newspaper cut or torn into 3cm (1 inch) wide strips by 15 to 30cm (6-12 inches) in length.
• Scrap white paper, such as computer or copy paper cut or torn into 3cm (1 inch) wide strips by 15 to 30cm (6-12 inches) in length.
• Paper Mache paste – Water and glue (PVA Glue or Elmers Glue), a dish and a stirring stick.
• 1 small bowl or bucket to balance the balloon.
• Acrylic or poster paint.
• Paint brushes.
• Optional – Small wrapped candy Easter Eggs and 1 plastic sandwich sized bag.

• Paint brushes.
• Optional – Small wrapped candy Easter Eggs and 1 plastic sandwich sized bag.

How to make a Paper Mache Easter Egg -

  • Cover the table with the plastic to protect it.
  • Blow up the balloon. A firm balloon gives better results.
  • Prepare the paper mache paste as directed in the video below.
  • Dip a strip of newspaper in the paste, then pull it gently through your fingers to remove excess paste.
  • Place the strip of newspaper on the balloon. Repeat Step 4 and Step 5 until the balloon is completely covered with 3 layers of newspaper strips.
  • You can always rest it in the small bowl or bucket if it helps whilst you Paper Mache.
  • Leave a 8cm (3 inch) diameter hole uncovered on the balloon if you plan on putting candy in it. Do this where the tied end is.
  • Stand the balloon in the small bowl or bucket to balance it whilst it dries completely. It may take a day or two to dry. This is a good Friday project to come back to on Monday! PATIENCE IS THE KEY THING HERE – YOU MUST LET IT DRY COMPLETELY TO WORK!
  • If you have chosen to put candy in your egg, secure the wrapped candy in the plastic bag and place it in the egg through the whole that was left open.
  • Notice that now it is called an egg, not a balloon! :-)
  • Prepare the paper mache paste again.
  • This time use the white paper strips, dipped with excess paste removed, to put 2 layers on the egg.
  • Set the balloon back in the bowl to dry completely. Remember it may take a day or two to dry.
  • Now you can paint your egg! You may want to paint the egg all one colour, let it dry and then decorate it to look like an Easter egg. Use different colours of paint and glitter! Let your imagination run wild! :-)
  • Let it dry completely! Your Easter Egg is ready! What a great present to give to someone special at Easter! :-)

The video below will tell you how to make the Paper Mache Paste and how to Paper Mache a Balloon to make your Easter Egg!
