reindeer x2 in snow

letter r eindeer and caribou are the only members of the deer family where the female and calves grow antlers as well as the male. They shed these antlers annualy.

letter e xtra wide, splayed-out hooves help reindeer walk on ice and snow easily, as they spread their weight in the same way that snow shoes help human’s walk on snow.

letter icey cold weather and snow are no problem to reindeer as they have extremely thick coats. The hair on their faces grows down over their nose or muzzle to keep there noses warm when grazing in the snow.

letter nomadic tribes (that is people who do not live in one place and travel around) that live in the Arctic and Russia have made reindeer into domestic pets!

letter during May and June the mother reindeer give birth to their babies. The baby reindeer are very outgoing and fun loving and grow very fast indeed. They love to make friends and play around.

letter every reindeer has two types of coat. A short, dark coat in the summer months and a thick, lighter coloured coat in the cold winter months. They have to have that thicker coat to survive the winter weather.

letter each reindeer lives around 10 years in the wild, but in captivity they can live to around 18 or even 20 years. This is because in captivity they face very little hardship compared to living in the wild.

letter reindeer love to eat mushrooms, lichen and vegetation and leaves from willow and birch trees, but they have also been known to eat lemmings, fish and bird eggs!

Watch this video about nomadic reindeer herders and their reindeer.
