Sapporo Snow Festival

6th to the 12th February 2012

The Sapporo Snow Festival is one of Japan’s largest winter events. It attracts a growing number of visitors from Japan and abroad every year.

It’s estimated that about two million people come to Sapporo each year to see the hundreds of beautiful snow statues and ice sculptures.

It lasts for seven days in February when the statues and sculptures ( both large and small ) turn Sapporo into a winter dreamland of crystal-like ice and white snow.

The first Sapporo Snow Festival was held in 1950, with only six snow statues made by local high school students. Since then the Snow Festival has constantly expanded, gaining worldwide recognition.
